The Most Violent Woman

In the villages of Northern Uganda, change often comes slowly. But through our Parent Support Groups (PSGs), we’re beginning to see remarkable transformations unfold—one family, one community at a time.

Bruno, our Uganda Project Coordinator, has poured his heart into these PSGs, working tirelessly to support parents and caregivers as they learn new ways to nurture and strengthen their families. Recently, as he wrapped up a session, Bruno found himself wondering: Do the participants understand? Are the PSGs truly making a difference? Are parents actually learning?

Little did he know, he was about to get an answer to those questions in the most powerful way.

In the village of Amiabil, a mother who had once been known as “the most violent woman” was finding her life changed in ways she never imagined. She shared her story with Bruno, recounting how, before joining the PSGs, her home was filled with fear. Every day, her children would run from her whenever she came home, afraid of her anger and being beaten. Her heart broke as she described the way her actions had distanced her from the people she loved most.

Then, through the PSGs, she began to learn about love, empathy, and the power of connection. With each session, she started putting these new lessons into practice. Slowly, she found herself speaking differently to her children, reaching out to them, and embracing them with love. Now, when she returns home, her children no longer run away. They run toward her, eager to sit by her side. In her words, “I started loving my children…I have a very good relationship with them now. I want the PSGs to continue!”

Her transformation has even spread beyond her family. Neighbors and other villagers who once witnessed her anger have noticed the change. Her story is inspiring others in her community to believe that they, too, can change.

For Bruno, this moment was a deeply moving reminder of the work we are called to do. Recently, the Kole District Community Development Officer attended the PSGs and shared his perspective on their impact in the local communities. You can hear his powerful reflections in this short video:
